A medical AI recommends discharging a patient too early
A hospital uses an AI tool that analyzes patient records and recommends discharge timing. For an 84-year-old patient recovering from pneumonia, the AI recommends discharge after 3 days. The attending physician, under pressure to follow the algorithm (which is tracked by hospital administration for cost management), approves the discharge. The patient is readmitted 48 hours later and dies from complications.
